<property:Processing_error_message rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#string">[2,"smw-datavalue-wikipage-property-invalid-title","Has original text","Curcumin\n\nThis is an ingredient in the Indian cooking spice, turmeric. It has been shown to inhibit\nthe growth of cancer cells of various types in laboratory studies via numerous different\nmechanisms (272). Like genistein, it inhibits the tyrosine kinase signaling and also\ninhibits angiogenesis. Perhaps most importantly, it inhibits proteins that prevent\ndamaged cells from undergoing apoptosis, a family of genes known as nuclear factor\nkappa B. Of all of the supplements on this list it is the most potent anti-cancer agent in\nlaboratory studies. However, it also should be noted that its bioavailability from oral\nintake is limited, although bioavailability supposedly is increased when curcumin is\ncombined with piperine (the main ingredient in black pepper). The Life Extension\nFoundation sells a version of curcumin that they claim has much greater bioavailability\nthan anything else on the market. Despite the limited bioavailability, there is some\nevidence of clinical effectiveness. In a study of dermatitis induced by radiotherapy for\nbreast cancer, a double-blind placebo controlled trial compared a placebo with curcumin\n(2 grams three times\/day), both of which were taken throughout radiation treatment.\nSignificantly less dermatitis occurred in patients receiving curcumin (273).\n\nCurcumin has also been used in combination with a second supplement, quercetin, (see\nbelow) for the treatment of an inherited disorder of the colon in which hundreds of\nadenomas develop and eventually colon cancer (274). Five patients with the disorder\nreceived 480 mg of curcumin and 20 mg of Quercetin three times daily. Polyp number\nand size were assessed at baseline and then six months after starting the supplements.\nFor all patients there was a decrease in polyp size and number, which was statistically\nsignificant."]</property:Processing_error_message>
